Why Artificial Turf Face Weight Matters

November 27, 2019

If you’re preparing to transform a client’s Sacramento home with artificial turf landscaping, there are several factors to consider when choosing which specific turf product is right for them. While many homeowners think that all artificial grass is more or less the same, there are actually dozens of product lines that vary across several factors such as pile height, blade color, drainage rate, and face weight. Whether you’re new to the installation industry or a homeowner looking to DIY a project, the terminology associated with artificial grass installation can be confusing at first. One of the most crucial aspects of artificial grass products to understand, however, is face weight, both what it is and why it matters.

What is face weight?

Face weight is a measurement that refers to how many ounces of yarn are used per square yard of turf. The higher the face weight, the longer and denser the artificial turf blades will be. Face weight measurement is one indicator of density and durability. Turf products with higher face weights, such as those more than 80 ounces per square yard, are softer and thicker. Many homeowners prefer a high face weight for residential installations because of the enhanced appearance that it provides. Since face weight is merely an indication of product weight, an artificial turf product with a high face weight may have fibers that are thicker, that are more densely tufted, or that are taller (if not all three). Therefore it’s important to still take other factors such as pile height into consideration when choosing the appropriate artificial turf product.

How does face weight affect my installation?

Your artificial turf’s face weight is a factor in the product’s foot traffic suitability, appearance, product quality, and overall cost. A turf product with a face weight of 45 ounces per square yard, for example, will be much less dense and sturdy than a turf product with a face weight of 85 ounces. The higher density of yarn fibers will make the lawn feel fuller, softer, and lusher. It creates an enhanced appearance over low-density face weights, creating more of a showpiece lawn that looks and feels more like real grass. Products with a higher face weight are also better suited to withstand heavy foot traffic. If the property has numerous kids or pets running around, a higher face weight will be a better investment that stands up better over time versus lower face weight products.

When you’re getting ready to install artificial grass on any Sacramento property, you first need to choose the ideal product.
